Dusty Gamer & Troupe play

My regular readers know that I’m frequently blogging about the Utopia campaign we’re playing. I’ve often wanted to write a more detailed explanation on how the campaign is actually played, but luckily, my friend (and one of the players) Joonas who runs the Dusty Gamer blog did it for me.   1. Do you have any more advice on the role play part of the games? I’ve always been more of a painter/modeller, but for the past 6 weeks I’ve been gaming multiple times per week with Flying Lead – the Utopia campaign is definitely the main reason for this, so you have my utmost thanks! I’ve never RPGed before, so any advice would be appreciated! Does the GM create the various squad members?


    • Hi Chris, thanks for the comment! Great to hear that Utopia has been an inspiration.

      In Utopia the players created the squad members, although there is nothing to stop the GM from doing it as well. Character creation was a very straightforward process. Basically all characters followed a simple template stat-wise (Q, C, gear, possible skills) and then were given a bit of personality. This was simply done via a short improvised description, e.g. “Jones is a gruff old bastard, think Clint Eastwood as a Colonial Marine.” After that we’ve built the characters with the short role-playing episodes between scenarios of Flying Lead. I’ve delegated most of the character building to players, putting the characters into various situations: “Two of the characters have a fight. Who are fighting and why?” “Someone has had an accident – what has happened?” “Whose birthday are you celebrating in the mess hall?” and so on.
